As pets age, it may become more difficult for your elderly pet to potty outdoors. Pet owners of senior pets often consider alternatives to traditional potty breaks because of special needs of their older pet.

For instance, senior pets often have difficulty going up and down stairs due to arthritis or hip dysplasia. Older dogs should still go up and down stairs at times, but the frequency of numerous bathroom breaks may aggravate his condition and cause undue pain and stress. By limiting the number of times your dog goes up and down stairs, or outside, it can reduce his overall discomfort and stress.

Urinary incontinence may also make it difficult for your pet to get outside. Diabetes, or other conditions that may cause frequent urination or the inability of your senior pet to hold his urine may make it difficult for you to take your beloved furry friend outside more times per day than usual. This loss of control may be embarrassing for your dog, especially if they start having accidents because they are having difficulties getting outside.

Some older pets also become very stubborn in their old age, and their potty preferences may change as they age. Some older dogs have a phobia of inclement weather like rain, snow or thunderstorms, and some just don’t like getting their paws wet.

If your senior pet has exhibited a resistance to going outside, or if pain, outdoor conditions, or frequency, are making it more challenging for him to get outside, you may want to consider an indoor potty for your elderly pet.

Potty pads, or pee pads, can sometimes be used outdoors, in a covered area – like on a balcony or porch, for those pets who still prefer the outdoor experience.
